Introduction
It’s been years since we’ve seen someone attempt a foldable mouse after the old Microsoft Surface Arc, and Logitech’s new Mobi Fold therefore comes as a bit of a surprise.
For a brand known for some of the best wireless mice in recent years, such as the Logitech MX Master 4 and Logitech MX Anywhere 3S, a folding mouse seemed like a bit of an odd decision, especially as some of its own mice are portable as it is.
The Mobi Fold is a fresh take on a concept I thought we’d left behind – a mouse that folds up to nothing so you can take it with you in a bag when you commute – designed chiefly for those on the go, it’s designed to pair well with smaller form factor keyboards such as the Logitech MX Keys Mini or Logitech Pop Icon Combo from its own range. With a 4000 DPI sensor inside, convenient Bluetooth technology and its clever foldable design in tow, it might seem like a compelling purchase on paper, although the £69.99/$79.99 makes it quite a premium option.
To see how easy the Mobi Fold is to live with, I’ve been putting it through its paces for the last week or so.
Design
Intriguing folding design Ergonomics takes some getting used to Minimal button arrangement The big thing with the Mobi Fold is right there in the name – it folds up. And as such, it’s interesting to show it to people when they spot the oddly-shaped mouse on your desk. The novelty of showing a mouse that snaps shut isn’t one that’s worn off in my week of testing, that’s for sure. Folding it up also locks the inputs of the mouse buttons to prevent any accidental clicks or scrolling, which is convenient.
It means the comfort factor of this mouse is different to more conventional ones. There are literally no sides to it, so you can’t rest your thumb anywhere as you can with other office mice. To help with comfort, Logitech has ribbed the central portion of the mouse, which is also where the snappy hinge is, so it can fold up.
The Mobi Fold is covered in a similar rubberised finish to the old Logitech MX Master 3S, which gives it almost a soft-touch feel. It’s pleasant, although, as with the MX Master 3S, long-term use could turn this surface shiny and grubby from the natural oils in your hands and fingers, which is just something to be aware of.
The default angle for this Logitech mouse is quite high, which can take some getting used to, and it’s a sharper angle at the top of the arc than it might initially seem.
The front portion is a colour-matched plastic, which is where you’ll find its two main buttons and a touchpad in the middle that acts as the scrolling surface, rather than a standard scroll wheel. It’s easy to use your middle finger to scroll.
They are the only buttons on the Mobi Fold, especially with it lacking any form of sides for other navigation buttons to go. On the underside, you’ve got a small button for pairing and switching between connected devices, plus a USB-C port on the rear end.
Performance
Zippy 4000 DPI sensitivity
Quirks of a touch surface and form factor take some getting used to
Convenient Bluetooth pairing and strong battery life
Inside, the Mobi Fold features a 4000 DPI sensor, which is surprisingly zippy for such a small mouse. Tracking feels accurate, and it’s alright to use for office workloads.
If I’m being nitpicky, the fact that this mouse only has two small points of contact on the underside means it isn’t the smoothest against using a more traditional mouse. Likewise, if you hold the mouse in a slightly off fashion, it isn’t the most stable.
The Mobi Fold is light, as you’d expect with it being one continuous piece, making it both easily portable and meaning it isn’t fatiguing to use over extended periods in my testing. It’s just a case of making sure your hand is as comfortable as possible.
Transitioning to a touch surface is a little bit strange compared to a standard scroll wheel, and you are sacrificing the tactile feel that a normal scroll wheel provides. The scrolling feel is also less smooth than with a wheel, and the mouse tends to do so in a blockier manner as a result. The main mouse buttons on the Mobi Fold have a tactile and dampened feel, though, and are also rather quiet, similar to a lot of other Logitech mice I’ve used.
Connectivity is purely via Bluetooth, meaning this mouse plays nicely with a range of devices – I had no issues using it with my MacBook Pro for work on my Windows gaming PC. You can also connect to up to three devices simultaneously and switch between them with ease with the dedicated button on the underside. It’s a shame there isn’t 2.4GHz receiver connectivity, as it’s reserved solely for the Mobi Fold for Business variant.
Logitech says the Mobi Fold will last for up to 30 days on a charge, which is rather good. In my week or so of using it, the charge has dropped to around 80%, which would make sense. If you’re caught in a pinch, then a minute of charge can give you 22 hours of runtime – you’ll just need a cable and power adapter to do so, as neither is provided in the box.
Software and Lighting
Advanced software customisation with Action Ring customisationNo lighting The Mobi Fold is compatible with Logitech’s vast Options+ software, where you can remap buttons, adjust the speed of the scroll wheel and even set it to call up Logitech’s clever Actions Ring, which can house specific functions for apps in one centralised place.
The software also brings over options for Logitech’s Easy Switch pairing and the clever Flow feature, which allows you to copy and paste text and files across different operating systems, as long as the devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and both have Logitech’s software installed. It’s very useful for power users, that’s for sure.
Perhaps given the more professional nature of the Mobi Fold, there isn’t any lighting to be found. It isn’t necessarily needed, and you wouldn’t necessarily have had somewhere to put it.
